Tajik fruits and vegetables losing ground in Kazakhstan

In 2024, Kazakhstan reduced imports of Tajik fruits and vegetables by three times, and this trend has continued into 2025. As of March, exports of Tajik onions and garlic dropped to 17,900 tons, 3.3 times less than the year before.

Fresh fruit exports also declined, including apricots, peaches, and grapes. The main reasons include increased imports from China and changes in Kazakhstan's market structure.

Import volumes were also affected by new quotas and import permits introduced in early 2024. Despite the drop in quantity, Tajik onion exports reached $3.2 million in 2024, half as much as the year before, though prices rose.

Tajikistan continues exporting vegetables, nuts, and fresh and dried fruits to Kazakhstan. On March 18, 2025, the director of Tajikistan's Export Agency, Bakhriddin Sirojiddinzoda, met with Kazakh ambassador Valikhan Turekhanov in Dushanbe to discuss expanding trade and launching joint agricultural processing projects.
