"We are in the final stages with most of the winter references, which are slowly coming to an end between now and the end of May. On the other hand, the radish campaign is already over. For the latter, we are satisfied in terms of quantities produced and handled, but less so in terms of prices. We believe that something was missing for us to carry out a solid campaign," says Alessio Mattia, Sales Manager of Agrieuropa, about the current campaign.
"The kohlrabi campaign, which has served as a key reference point for our company in recent years, is now coming to an end. Overall, the results are positive, with stable prices and satisfactory volumes."
The company, based in Terracina (Latina), is gearing up for the summer campaign, drawing on its extensive product catalog. "We're getting ready," says the manager, "trusting that the weather will be on our side."
Agrieuropa cultivates, processes and packs vegetables in the heart of the Agro Pontino area, located in the province of Latina (region Latium) and spread over the municipalities of Terracina, San Felice Circeo, Sabaudia and Pontinia, extending over 400 hectares, including 303 hectares of greenhouses and about 100 hectares of open field cultivation.
During the winter season, Agrieuropa offers a wide range of vegetables, including baby leaf varieties such as lamb's lettuce, spinach, and rocket, alongside crops like courgettes, parsley root, long and round turnips, kohlrabi, radishes, and carrots, most of which are destined for international markets. As summer approaches, the focus shifts to seasonal staples such as cucumber, watermelon, peppers, and courgettes, the latter of which is available year-round.
"We are in the home stretch," Mattia continues. "In about a week, we will finish with the Chinese cabbage, a new addition to our product line this year. For its first harvest, we are very pleased with the results. We handled small quantities, partly because we only had 3 hectares of production. We certainly plan to increase both acreage and production next year. At the same time, we are aware this is a niche product that will complement and diversify our existing range."
"We are in the middle of the courgette campaign, which is showing a less-than-optimal trend. At the moment, we have the product, but the demand is lower than the supply. In general, it has not been a great campaign. Contrary to what we expected, it has been marked by a standard trend, with consistently low prices."
Agrieuropa is now preparing for the watermelon campaign, which, as always, will start in mid-May and end in early September. The sales manager concludes by saying: "We are confident that the season will be good and that the weather will not be abnormal, so that high temperatures will encourage the consumption of watermelons. With the exception of late transplants, which are down by 50 hectares, this year's schedule is in line with that of previous seasons."
