The Nakuru County Government in Kenya has distributed 91,000 avocado seedlings to local farmers, aiming to enhance avocado production. Leonard Bor, the County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture, highlighted the initiative's focus on empowering farmers with a high-value crop. The avocado export market in Kenya is expanding, with the majority of exports heading to Europe and the Middle East.
During the distribution event in Kuresoi North Sub-County, Bor explained the deployment of agricultural extension officers to provide technical support and modern agricultural practices across all wards. "In the 2023/2024 financial year, we distributed 60,000 avocado seedlings across 44 agricultural wards. Due to the success of that program, we increased the number to 91,000 this year," Bor stated.
The department plans to conduct field days to educate farmers on climate-smart agriculture, addressing food security and climate resilience. Kenya is the second-largest avocado producer in Africa and ranks sixth globally. Small-scale farmers contribute 70% of the total avocado output.
Farmers have responded positively to the initiative. Jane Wanjiru, a beneficiary, remarked, "This is a gift that will benefit even our children." Paulina Sang, another farmer, noted the county government's vision, stating it would enhance community nutrition and provide sustainable income.
