Investing in the next generation of leaders is essential for creating an innovative future in Australian horticulture. The Nuffield Scholarship offers primary producers a life-changing opportunity to travel overseas and study an agricultural topic of their choice, supporting continued learning and leadership development in the sector.
Hort Innovation proudly supports the Nuffield Scholarship program, helping to equip emerging leaders with global insights and skills to drive the horticulture industry forward.
The 15-week program is designed for individuals with a passion for learning and aims to enhance participants' knowledge, management capabilities, and leadership skills for the benefit of both their industry and local communities.
Since its inception, the program has supported scholars from the rubus, onion, and vegetable sectors.
One such scholar, third-generation farmer Catherine Velisha, used her Nuffield Scholarship to explore grower-led education programs around the world. Her focus was on understanding how these programs helped people appreciate the value of vegetables and their role in promoting health. Her travels took her to the UK, USA, Ireland, and various locations across Australia.
In her final report, released on 1 May 2025, Catherine found a growing trend of collaboration between the agricultural sector, educational institutions, and local communities. These partnerships are helping to improve understanding of food production and promote healthier eating habits.
Applications for the next cohort of Nuffield Scholars are open until Friday, 16 May 2025. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed in June and July, with successful applicants announced at the Nuffield Australia National Conference in Adelaide, taking place from 8–10 September 2025.
