The supply of greenhouse-grown tomatoes of all varieties is strong. "We've seen a steady supply from all regions," says Ray Mastronardi, vice president of sales at Del Fresco Pure, adding that the majority of its supply is coming from its greenhouses in Kingsville and Leamington, Ontario, and added supply from Mexico–all regions that have seen favorable growing conditions. There is also industry production in Mexico, British Columbia, and Spain. "Overall, compared to last year, the supply is similar or even higher."
Del Fresco Pure grows and markets a variety of tomatoes including snacking tomatoes such as its G.R.EAT! Grab, Rinse, Eat! Grape tomatoes, Mini Mixers, and The Original Cherry Tomato on the Vine.
Meanwhile meeting that strong supply is strong demand that is growing. "Tomatoes are always in demand not only for their convenience but also for their versatility," says Mastronardi. "Demand is poised for growth which is driven by consumer preferences for quality, sustainability, and year-round availability. Tomato consumption is evolving in dynamic ways, influenced by technology, health trends, and sustainability efforts."
Supply impacting pricing
As for pricing, it is lower in some areas due to high supply. "Looking ahead, ample supply is expected for the next few weeks as well as better demand with the weather warming up," says Mastronardi.
Despite these positive trends, there are industry challenges to address as the growing season picks up. "Climate change poses a threat to farming as a whole, impacting yields and quality. Additionally, economic factors such as price fluctuations could affect global supply chains," says Mastronardi, adding that environmental challenges such as disease are also another area of concern.
