New vegetable research station opens in Antalya

On Thursday, 15 May 2025, Sakata inaugurated a new research station in Gaziler, located in the Kepez district of Antalya, Türkiye. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Şakir Fırat Erkal, Antalya Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry; Dr. Hüseyin Çancı, Assistant Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture at Akdeniz University; Burak Gönen, Chairman of the Türkted Board of Directors; Hiroshi Sakata, President of Sakata Seed Corporation; and Basile de Bary, Chief Executive Officer of Sakata Vegetables Europe (SVE).

The new research and development (R&D) station spans 2.5 hectares and features a range of facilities, including a nursery, traditional greenhouses, crossing block greenhouses, hydroponic greenhouses, a laboratory, fields, and offices. This facility will enhance Sakata's capacity to advance its cucumber research programs while expanding its ongoing tomato and pepper research efforts.

Sakata aims to develop new vegetable varieties that meet the needs of Turkish growers and plant raisers, while also catering to the expectations of markets in Europe, Eurasia, the Middle East, and Central Asia. The R&D station will focus on creating varieties that offer improved taste, disease resistance, and adaptability to diverse climatic conditions.

The company employs 34 people in Türkiye, with its Turkish headquarters, Sakata Tarım Ürünleri ve Tohumculuk Sanayi ve Ticaret Limited Şirketi, located in Izmir. Sakata combines traditional expertise with advanced technology to develop vegetable seeds that meet high standards, including taste, resilience, and environmental adaptability.
