Potatoes New Zealand will join global celebrations on 30 May 2025 to mark the International Day of Potato, recognising the vital importance of one of the world's key staple crops.
The 2025 theme, "Shaping history, feeding the future," highlights the potato's long journey from ancient agricultural roots to its central role in modern food systems. The theme also underscores the potato's significance in sustainable agriculture, nutrition, and food security.
Kate Trufitt, CEO of Potatoes New Zealand, says the occasion is a timely reminder of the crop's enduring value.
"From ancient civilisations in the Andes to Aotearoa paddocks today, potatoes have shaped cultures and diets," she said. "Looking to the future, they will continue to be part of the solution for feeding a growing New Zealand population while supporting our potato growers."
New Zealand's potato industry is a vital contributor to the national economy, with growers, processors, and exporters working together to deliver nutritious, high-quality food to domestic and global markets.
Paul Olsen, Chair of Potatoes New Zealand, noted the forward-looking nature of the sector.
"New Zealand growers are future-focused — innovating with sustainable practices and adapting to changing environments. International Day of Potato gives us the chance to honour their work and celebrate the mighty spud's ongoing impact."
Potatoes New Zealand is encouraging New Zealanders to mark the day by enjoying locally grown potatoes, exploring their rich history, and recognising the people behind the produce.
