Mexico produces over one-third of the world’s avocados

Mexico accounts for over a third of global avocado production, making it the top producer worldwide. Michoacán, a state in Mexico, contributes nearly 80% of the country's avocado output, with annual production exceeding 2 million metric tonnes. The region's volcanic soil and favorable climate support extended growing seasons, primarily for the Hass variety, which is prized for its creamy texture. As a result, Mexico plays a dominant role in the global avocado market, exporting large volumes, particularly to the United States.

Globally, Mexico leads with an annual output of approximately 2.5 million metric tonnes. The country's ideal agricultural conditions produce high-quality Hass avocados that have helped solidify its position as the top exporter. Other significant avocado-producing countries include Colombia, which produces about 1.1 million metric tonnes annually, with key growing regions in Antioquia and Tolima, and exports mainly targeting Europe.

Peru generates roughly 0.9 million metric tonnes each year, cultivating both Hass and Fuerte varieties, with its primary export markets being Europe and China. Indonesia contributes around 0.7 million metric tonnes, benefiting from a tropical climate that supports year-round production, though most of its output is consumed domestically. Kenya produces about 0.4 million metric tonnes, focusing on Fuerte and Hass varieties and exporting largely to the Middle East and Europe.

Additional producers such as the United States, the Dominican Republic, Chile, Brazil, and Vietnam also cultivate avocados, capitalizing on climates suitable for the crop. Some of these nations prioritize export markets, while others largely meet domestic demand.

Mexican avocados, particularly the Hass variety, are favored for their long shelf life and smooth texture, qualities attributed to cultivation in regions with volcanic soil and ample sunlight. Their year-round availability ensures a steady supply for international markets.
