Potato, onion, banana, and avocado imports stood out in the first quarter

Spanish Q1 fresh fruit and vegetable imports increased by 10% in volume and 15% in value

Spanish fresh fruit and vegetable imports in the first quarter of the year grew by 10% in volume and 15% in value over the same period in 2024, totaling 1.2 million tons and 1,442 million euros, respectively. Potatoes, onions, and tomatoes were the most imported vegetables in this period, and bananas, avocados, and apples were the most imported fruits.

Vegetable imports up to March increased by 9% in volume and 3% in value, totalling 659,197 tons and 501 million euros, over the same period of the previous year. Potatoes were the most imported product, with 417,222 tons (+4%) and 186 million euros (-3.5%). This was followed at a considerable distance by onions, with 54,363 tons (+5%) and 32 million euros (-7%), and tomatoes with 40,387 tons (+42%) and 66.5 million (+60%).

Fruit imports in the first quarter grew by 10% in volume and 22% in value compared to the same period of last year, reaching 536,620 tons and 941 million euros.

Bananas are the most imported fruit, with 90,634 tons (+13%) and 62 million euros (+16%). They are followed by avocados, with 54,327 tons (+39%) and 122 million euros (+17.5%), and apples, with 51,380 tons (+2%) and 53 million euros (+4%), according to data from the Customs and Excise Department, processed by Fepex, which shows a greater dynamism and growth in imports than sales abroad. In the first quarter of the year, fruit and vegetable imports increased by 10% in volume and 15% in value. In contrast, fruit and vegetable exports only increased by 0.8% in volume and 5% in value.
