With the 4th of July being the next significant U.S. holiday, it's expected that there will be a promotable supply of avocados for the holiday. Right now, the supply of avocados is good and they are being sourced from multiple regions. "There's fruit predominantly from four countries of origin–Mexico, California, Peru, and Colombia," says Calavo Growers Inc.'s Peter Shore, adding that the current supply looks similar to last year at this time.
As far as growing conditions, California has seen a cool spring for growing though temperatures are now starting to reach more historically average levels. "California avocados have a peak size of 48 and 60s and we expect good supply to keep coming in on those sizes from there–really on 60s and larger," says Shore.
Start to rain in Mexico
Meanwhile, Mexico has been warm but it is beginning to receive rain in the Michoacan and Jalisco growing districts. "This is when the rainy period starts and we'll see more rain through to September," says Shore, adding that Mexican fruit has been predominantly 48s and smaller sizes. "We'll still peak on 48s but then we'll have 60s and 70s as well."
As for demand, it's also good. "Retail ads reported by the USDA have been up over last year's ads in the past few weeks so that's good," he says. "Market prices have moderated from the winter and spring pricing."
