Harvesting is set to start around mid-June for Acquaviva red onions, a well-known bulb of large size (up to 1.2 kg) and flattened shape. Despite the fact that the bulbs are still in the process of swelling and ripening, several purchase proposals and supply requests are already arriving at the Agriconetto farm from Italian and European markets and retailer platforms, thanks to the product's popularity.

Giammarco Lionetti, sales manager of the Agriconetto farm, says that: "We are about to start another season, which promises to be a positive one, given the enthusiasm and liveliness that customers share in wanting to put this article on the shelves as soon as possible. The weather, which is cooler than usual and with frequent rainfall, has slightly delayed ripening: temperatures more in line with the season have only been recorded for a few days, which will allow us to complete the production cycle.
Current crop status
From the first samples taken over the past few hours, bulbs seem to have reached a satisfactory size. "Compared to last year, we have increased the areas invested by 2.5 hectares. Recently, we used to finish deliveries 2 to 4 weeks earlier than planned, and had to defer orders. With more volumes at our disposal, we believe we are limiting these phenomena and can better satisfy domestic and foreign customers."
The Apulian company also expects to speed up harvesting and reduce pallet preparation times thanks to the purchase of an innovative harvest mechanisation machine.
