Prices on fruits and berries in Russia have risen sharply by 26% year-on-year, according to data from the "Check Index" of the OFD Platform company.
Experts warn that returning spring frosts could reduce this year's apple harvest by up to 15%.
Despite the higher prices, demand for fruits remains strong. The number of purchases in this category increased by more than 20% over the same period.
The average price for strawberries in small retail stores reached 658 rubles per kilogram in May (around €7.89), up 55% compared to last year. Other fruits also saw notable price hikes:
- Apples: up 17%, to 189 rubles/kg (€2.27)
- Cherries: up 14%, to 691 rubles/kg (€8.29)
- Oranges: up 13%, to 186 rubles/kg (€2.23)
- Lemons: up 12%, to 302 rubles/kg (€3.62)
- Bananas: up 6%, to 198 rubles/kg (€2.37)
- Peaches: up 13%, to 485 rubles/kg (€5.82)
For comparison, prices of confectionery products rose by 5%, vegetables by 15%, and bread by 13%.
