Potato Market Report 4th June:

Cooler weather supports UK potato demand

The colder weather experienced this week should help boost household potato consumption. Food service demand saw a slight increase over the bank holiday weekend, as expected. In the southeast, more early varieties such as Home Guard and Premiere are coming onto the market. So far, demand has been described as quite good, and quality is also very good. Queens should be ready for digging in the next two weeks. The market is in a different position compared to this time last year, when potatoes were in very short supply.

Across mainland Europe, 10 to 20mm or more of rain in key potato-growing areas—from France through to the Netherlands—has temporarily eased drought stress. On domestic markets, prices for best-quality potatoes are holding. In the UK, rain has improved conditions in the fields, although the total rainfall was less than expected in many regions.
