Kalimullah Khan, often referred to as the 'Mango Man' of India, has introduced a new mango variety in his Malihabad orchard, naming it 'Rajnath Aam' after Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Known for his unique grafting methods, Khan has also named mango varieties after notable Indian figures such as Sachin Tendulkar and Narendra Modi. The Padma Shri awardee aims to preserve the legacy of influential leaders through these names.
Speaking to PTI Videos, Khan emphasized, "I name my mangoes after people who have served the country meaningfully. I want these names to live on for generations." He shared insights on the improved conditions following the Pahalgam attack and stressed dialogue over conflict, saying, "Peace, not conflict, is the solution."
Khan highlighted the mango heritage of Malihabad, noting the region had over 1,300 varieties in 1919, many of which have vanished. "I've been working to preserve and revive them, and today I've developed over 300 varieties," he explained. Khan began his crossbreeding innovations as a child, despite not excelling in formal education.
Among his varieties is the "Asl-ul-Muqarrar," which drew attention from the then World Bank president due to its aromatic properties. This meeting led to a promise of land allocation, yet it remains unfulfilled.
Dedicated to enhancing mango diversity, Khan's focus is on the fruit's health benefits, indicating areas for scientific research.
