There is an ample supply of strawberries from California's Ventura County and the Watsonville/Salinas regions right now. "The growing conditions have been favorable and contributing to strong volumes," says Chris Martin of Westlake Produce Co., adding that the supply levels are comparable to this time last year, with steady production and consistent quality on strawberries.
In both regions, the strawberry season began on time with the weather cooperating. "The crops have peaked as expected, and the season is projected to continue smoothly, weather permitting," says Martin.
How is the demand for strawberries feeling? Current demand is moderate, somewhat softened by the abundance of other California-grown fruit options available. However, it is expected that consumption will remain steady if retail promotions stay competitive.
Steady good volumes expected to continue
As for strawberry pricing, it has been favorable and aligned with the strong supply. "As long as the growing conditions remain steady, we anticipate continued healthy volumes in the coming weeks," says Martin. "No significant new strawberry products have been introduced, and the main challenge remains managing around any unexpected weather shifts."
Also in the berry category, blueberries are still shipping out of California, though Westlake Produce anticipates a transition to Oregon production in the near future.
