Texas citrus grower thanks Congresswoman De La Cruz for securing water from Mexico

"As a lifelong farmer in South Texas, I have witnessed first-hand the challenges our community has faced when it comes to accessing a critical resource: water," says T.J. Flowers with Lone Star Citrus. "For too long, the Mexican government has refused to comply with the 1944 Water Treaty." At this point, Mexico owes Texas over 1.3 million acre-feet of water.

Under previous Administrations, South Texas communities and industries were left dry and told nothing could be done. "Thankfully, that has been proven false and Congresswoman De La Cruz has delivered. Now, with President Trump and Congresswoman De La Cruz, we finally have water warriors in Washington, D.C. who are bringing hope back to the Valley."

Last week, Rep. De La Cruz shared the Mexican government has agreed to deliver up to 420,000 acre-feet of water between now and October. "We are proud to have a representative in D.C. who embodies the grit of the Texas farming community and is not afraid to buckle down to save our farms and communities. She is the voice we need. Not only does she hear our concerns and understand the critical importance of secure water, but she is also not afraid to fight for our livelihoods. Her determination is unlike any leader we have had before. From day one, she fought to hold the Mexican Government accountable for their treaty obligations and rallied the Texas delegation behind her," shared Flowers.

The Congresswoman's meeting with President Trump in February made it clear that the war for water was on. Flowers wants to thank Congresswoman De La Cruz for her hard work on behalf of all South Texas farmers and ranchers. "Because of her advocacy, she has ensured the Mexican government delivers almost a year's water between now and October 2025. This is a step in the right direction, and we look forward to continuing our fight to deliver a long-term solution to solve the water crisis."
