Global avocado demand to drive production, led by Mexico

Global avocado demand is projected to continue rising through 2033, opening up more business opportunities in producing countries, according to FAO and OECD forecasts.

Mexico, the world's top avocado producer and exporter, saw exports surge 29.7% in the first four months of 2025, reaching $1.664 billion. In 2024, total avocado exports reached $3.787 billion, with Mexico accounting for 40% of global avocado export value.

Driven by high profitability, strong demand, and attractive export prices, global avocado exports jumped from $3 billion in 2014 to $9.6 billion in 2024. Production is expected to grow 3.5% annually, reaching 14 million tons by 2033—more than triple the 2013 level.

The USDA projects Mexico's avocado output will rise 3% in 2025 to 2.75 million tons, with exports up 5% to 1.34 million tons.

While avocados still rank lowest in volume among major tropical fruits, they've seen the fastest growth—and are expected to remain the fastest-growing fruit over the next decade.

Other key exporters in 2024 included Peru (13% share), the Netherlands (12.9%), Spain (4.8%), Morocco (3.3%), and Colombia (3.2%).
