Apple farming expands in South Minas Gerais

Apple cultivation is gaining traction in South Minas Gerais, Brazil, as the current 7.2-hectare cultivation area is poised to expand to 10.2 hectares. This development involves acquiring 2,000 apple seedlings by a consortium of 20 growers from municipalities including Arceburgo, Areado, and Alfenas. These saplings, sourced from southern Brazil nurseries, are set for delivery in July and are anticipated to yield up to 60 tons annually once mature. This marks a 42% rise in planted area.

The initiative was spurred by the Minas Gerais Technical Assistance and Rural Extension Company (Emater-MG) in 2022, through demonstration units showcasing viable apple cultivation. The Eva and Princesa varieties, selected for their adaptability to the local climate, have already produced 30 tons in initial harvests. The push for local apple production targets supplying fresh produce to the regional market, minimizing dependency on refrigerated storage.

According to Deny SanĂ¡bio, Emater-MG's fruit growing coordinator, local demand through institutional programs like the National School Feeding Program (Pnae) presents market opportunities. He notes, "These municipalities have a high demand for fruit through the Pnae." Emater-MG is focusing on training technicians in the region with a session scheduled for Thursday (12/6). "We will train our technicians so that they can assist these producers with all the necessary information about the crop in the region," SanĂ¡bio states. This program aims to address necessary plant management requirements, including initial pruning and care insights.

The training, comprising theoretical insights and a technical visit, will equip technicians with skills to assist growers in managing the technical demands of apple farming, noted for its need for meticulous management.
