Mango harvest in Sinaloa, Mexico’s most voluminous mango region, commences

While Mexico's mango season is reaching peak levels, supply will continue for a couple more months. "We are now transitioning to Los Mochis in Northern Sinaloa and will have supply from this region from the end of June through the first of October," says Cindy Schwing with Splendid by Porvenir. Mangos from Northern Sinaloa now have the spotlight as the area is the latest mango growing region in the country. "Northern Sinaloa provides the largest volume of Mexican mangos by far and we capitalize on it by having ads in place with retailers as well as working with wholesalers and foodservice companies. Our goal is to support retailers and consumers in extending the Mexican season," Schwing added.

The projected volume for conventional mangos out of Los Mochis is looking very strong this year. Additionally, Splendid's organic plantings continue to increase as well. "So far, the conditions have been favorable, resulting in a positive outlook for the season. We've had necessary and timely rains that have helped size up the fruit. Furthermore, minimal winds mean limited scarring and a clean exterior quality. All in all, things are looking very positive if Mother Nature continues to cooperate."

Keitts are the king of mangos
For Splendid, the mango lineup from Northern Sinaloa consists of Ataulfos, Kents, and Keitts. Ataulfos will lead off with conventional and organic at the end of June and are marketed by Splendid as Jaguar mangos, tied to the Save the Jaguar campaign. By late July, early August, Kents will be available from this region (both conventional and organic) and hitting the market by late August are the biggest mangos of the season, called Keitt Kong mangos, also available in conventional and organic. "Keitts are the last mangos on the trees in Mexico and are a variety known to be significantly bigger in size," says Daniel Ibarra, owner of Splendid by Porvenir. They are available for just about six weeks of the year. Two years ago, Splendid branded the variety as Keitt Kong, a nod to King Kong as the variety is the king of mangos. "Kongs have hit it out of the park for us," commented Ibarra. "Most mango connoisseurs are lining up, eager to try our famous Keitt Kong mangoes, along with our other varieties."

The Los Mochis region plays an important role in extending the Mexican season and nicely complements the start-up of the offshore mango season that starts in Brazil around October. Another advantage of Northern Sinaloa is that mangos don't need to be treated with hot water as the area remains a fly-free zone. "As a result, the fruit holds up better and lasts longer."

Demand shows positive growth
The mango category as a whole has been experiencing positive growth in recent years. "Those of us who've worked tirelessly to move the needle for the mango category are witnessing the start of a mindset change," Schwing said. Data reports show that mangos have moved into the forefront in produce departments and foodservice establishments across the U.S. Their flavor has really been setting them apart from other produce items. Their distinct tropical taste is something consumers crave for a positive eating experience. "Mango flavor shows signs of trending penetration in the market as it is increasingly used as an ingredient in fresh and processed products, including smoothies, cocktails, salsas/dips, sushi, ice cream, chips, flavored waters, and many other food products. Fresh mango distributors intend to drive this tremendous momentum and ride the wave as long as it lasts, hopefully forever."

Splendid by Porvenir is a vertically integrated company, growing, packing, importing and distributing produce primarily to the U.S. and Canada. The company also exports directly out of Mexico to Europe and Asian markets. "As a family-owned business, we pride ourselves in the ability to adapt quickly to market conditions and customer requests," Ibarra said.
