In May, Belize experienced a 4.7% decrease in overall vegetable prices, as reported by the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB). However, specific items like lettuce and okra diverged from this trend. Lettuce prices increased by 29.1%, moving from $3.58 to $4.62 per pound, while okra prices rose by 16.0%, advancing from $3.29 to $3.81 per pound.
These adjustments contribute to a 1.0% rise in consumer prices and a 2.0% growth in the 'Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages' segment. The broader food price escalation is attributed to heightened costs for cereals and fruits, counterbalancing the overall drop in vegetable prices.
