This year, Carlini Avocado sent Brazil's first Hass avocado shipment to Chile, a milestone for the Brazilian avocado sector. "We had been trying to gain access to the Chilean market for years, as it is a major consumer of Hass avocados and is logistically near. The approval of the SAG allowed us to, finally, make our first shipment," said Cecilia Whately, a grower at Carlini Avocados and vice president of the Brazilian Association of Avocado Producers (Abacates do Brasil - AAB).
The export was carried out with the support of Abrafrutas, MAPA, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which provided technical support and facilitated the border crossing, as it was closed due to snowfall.
Carlini participated in the Frutas do Brasil–Chile Festival in Santiago, where she confirmed the Chilean market's interest in avocados. "We discovered how important avocados are in the Chilean diet, the professionalism of the industry there, and how well they handle fresh fruit. While this was an atypical year due to strong local production, we are confident that the future will bring opportunities for both countries," Whately said.
In Brazil, per capita consumption remains low, at 1.5 kilograms per year, compared to more than 8.6 kilograms in Chile. Nevertheless, Carlini works with Abacates do Brazil to change the food culture. "Avocados were traditionally eaten as a dessert in Brazil. Now we're promoting them in savory dishes. There's still a lot of growth potential there," she said.
Carlini Avocado is located in the interior of São Paulo, a region that accounts for 45% of Brazil's avocado production. Their proximity to the port of Santos facilitates export logistics. This season, the company has already exported its Hass production and is currently harvesting approximately 1,500 tons of tropical varieties.
The company exports to the United Kingdom, France, Poland, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Spain, Morocco, Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay, and plans to expand its presence in Europe and Asia. "The collaboration with Frutas do Brasil and ApexBrasil has been important to open new markets. Japan is our next target. However, we still need to improve transit times," she said.
The company applies sustainable practices such as integrated pest management, biological control, soil conservation, and biodiversity, and is certified by GLOBALG.A.P., Rainforest, and GRASP.
Regarding quality, Whately stressed: "We guarantee phytosanitary compliance, from the field to packaging, with strict monitoring, temperature control, and full traceability through our CLIQ system."
"We are committed to expanding our product range with four tropical avocado varieties: Fortuna, Quintal, Breda, and Margarida. We'll also continue to participate in international fairs with Abrafrutas and in national events with the AAB," she stated.
