Harvest NYC recalls enoki mushrooms over listeria risk

Harvest NYC Inc. of Brooklyn, NY 11231 is recalling its 200g packages of Enoki Mushrooms due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. While healthy individuals may only experience short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, Listeria infection can lead to miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The recalled Enoki Mushrooms were distributed nationwide in retail stores. The product is packaged in a 200g green plastic bag, marked with UPC barcode 6975730520101 on the back label. It was distributed by Hofood99 Inc., located at 21903 56th Ave, Oakland Gardens, NY 11364.

To date, no illnesses have been reported in connection with this issue. The contamination was discovered after samples collected from a store in Buffalo, NY were tested by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Food Laboratory. The analysis confirmed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in some of the 200g packages.

Consumers who purchased the product between January 11 and 31, 2025, are urged to destroy it immediately or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
