Organic produce sales hit $21.5 billion in 2024

U.S. sales of certified organic products reached a new high of $71.6 billion in 2024, with fresh produce continuing to lead the organic market. According to the 2025 Organic Market Report released by the Organic Trade Association (OTA), organic produce sales totaled $21.5 billion last year, maintaining its position as the top-selling organic category and accounting for 30.1% of total organic food sales.

Organic produce saw a year-on-year growth rate of 5.2%, outpacing the 2.5% growth rate of the overall food marketplace. Berries remained the strongest performer within the category, posting a 10.3% increase in sales in 2024. Bananas followed closely, with a robust 15.5% rise. Other sub-categories gaining traction included new apple varieties and tropical fruits such as mangoes, kiwi, and pineapples, all of which continued to build market momentum.

However, not all produce categories experienced growth. Organic packaged salad sales declined by 4.5%, while lettuce and other greens saw only marginal gains, increasing just 0.8% year-over-year.

The report noted that consumers are increasingly seeking cleaner ingredients and healthier food options, a trend that continues to drive organic produce sales. Additionally, the price gap between conventional and organic products narrowed in 2024, particularly in categories like grocery and dairy, making organic options more accessible to price-sensitive shoppers. This shift contributed to a rise in organic purchases across mainstream retail channels.

The OTA highlighted that organic produce remains the entry point for many consumers exploring the organic market, and it is expected to continue leading growth in the years ahead.
