California's bearing almond acreage grew slightly in 2025, according to the Initial Acreage Estimate from Land IQ, commissioned by the Almond Board of California (ABC). The report estimates that bearing orchards will cover approximately 1.389 million acres for the 2025 harvest—an increase of about 6,000 acres compared to 2024. This follows a similarly modest increase of 9,000 acres the previous year, which marked the smallest growth in two decades.
The report also anticipates that around 51,805 acres of almond orchards will be removed by the end of the crop year, adding to the nearly 67,000 acres removed during the 2023–24 period, based on Land IQ's November 2024 estimate. These removals contribute to a broader trend of declining total and non-bearing acreage across the state over the past three years.
Land IQ's 2025 Standing Acreage Initial Estimate focuses on bearing acreage—defined as orchards planted before 2023 that are mature enough to produce a commercial crop in 2025. The report does not include estimates for total almond acreage or non-bearing orchards, which will be addressed in Land IQ's Final Acreage Report, expected in November 2025.
While the latest report provides a snapshot of bearing acreage for the upcoming harvest, it does not offer a yield forecast. The first estimate of expected almond production for the 2025–26 crop year will be issued by the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) on May 12, with a more detailed assessment to follow in the Objective Report in July.
April's acreage estimate reflects changes occurring between September 1, 2024, and August 31, 2025, aligning with the industry's crop year from August 1 to July 31. Since 2018, the Almond Board of California has commissioned Land IQ, a Sacramento-based agricultural and environmental consulting firm, to produce detailed mapping and acreage analysis for the state's almond industry. These reports are intended to offer greater clarity and transparency to growers, processors, and stakeholders within the almond supply chain.
