Azerbaijan bans Turkmen tomatoes over virus

The Food Safety Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan (FSAA) has implemented control measures by sampling tomatoes imported from Turkmenistan. According to baku.ws, the Tomato brown rugose fruit virus was detected in 11 batches following laboratory analysis.

Consequently, the FSAA has decided to either remove these batches from the customs territory or destroy them. In line with Azerbaijani legislation, a temporary import ban on Turkmen tomatoes has been enacted. Additionally, Turkmenistan's relevant authority has been notified to undertake remedial actions at affected farms.

The Tomato brown rugose fruit virus primarily affects plants like tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, and tobacco, potentially causing 30-70% crop loss in tomato farms. This virus diminishes both the commercial quality and shelf life of produce. It spreads internationally through seed material and plant parts, including fruits. Mechanical transmission significantly contributes to the virus's territorial spread.
