Potato firm Nokota Packers hit by ransomware attack

Nokota Packers, a potato processing entity located in North Dakota, has been highlighted as a recent target for ransom demands. The J Group ransomware gang has featured the company on its dark web leak platform. Hackers allege the acquisition of 50 gigabytes of data from the longstanding potato industry participant.

In direct communications with the company, updates will be provided promptly upon their response. Cyberattackers report the procurement of sensitive information, encompassing personal, fiscal data, and financial reports from Nokota Packers. An evaluation by the Cybernews research unit confirmed attackers' intentions to release the entire 50 gigabytes.

Should these claims be confirmed, elevated cybersecurity risks may ensue, affecting the safety measures of not only Nokota Packers but also its clientele. Breaches such as these could draw attention from data privacy authorities. Moreover, leaked customer data might heighten the risk of identity theft.

The emergence of J Group ransomware was first recorded in the cybercriminal sphere in February 2025. Despite being relatively new, their activities are notably prevalent. Data from Cybernews' dark web analytics tool, Ransomlooker, indicates that J Group has targeted at least 17 organizations thus far.
