Torea Orchard in Ashburton sees dairy land transitioning into a significant-scale apple orchard, marking a unique development in New Zealand. This endeavor involves the initial commercial-scale operation of the Joli apple variety within Canterbury.
Owned by the NZ Super Fund (NZSF) and managed by FarmRight, this coastal farm spans 460 hectares, with 250 hectares being converted from dairy to apple orchards. The remaining portion continues dairy operations. The transformation includes a planting phase beginning with 125 hectares of Rockit apples and 25 hectares of Joli apples.
FarmRight's team, led by general manager Ed Tapp, harnesses its substantial experience in managing apple orchards across its properties. The first tree plantings began in June, with plans for further planting scheduled for early 2026.
The target by October 2026 is to plant 900,000 trees to produce approximately 116 million apples annually. The apples will initially be processed in Nelson, but a future on-site packhouse at Ashburton is planned. Infrastructure also includes accommodation facilities for seasonal workers engaged in picking and pruning, managed by orchard manager Matt Bentley.
FarmRight has identified Mid Canterbury's suitability for apple cultivation using advanced growing systems. This includes protection from frost and hail. The Torea development shows environmental benefits with reduced carbon and nitrogen emissions and lowered irrigation demands.
As detailed by T&G's chief operating officer, Shane Kingston, the partnership signifies shared growth strategies. The Joli and Rockit apples at Torea Orchard, destined for Asia and the US, highlight a unified pursuit to meet the global demand for premium apple varieties.
