Large wholesale batches of the new onion harvest have entered the wholesale markets in Uzbekistan's capital, maintaining the same price as the previous year. Concurrently, EastFruit experts have noted an increase in wholesale prices for last year's onions.
EastFruit's price monitoring data reveals that as of April 11, 2025, the average wholesale price for new crop onions stood at 5,000 UZS/kg ($0.39). Meanwhile, between April 4 and April 11, the average wholesale price for onions from the previous harvest surged by 50%, rising from 2,000 to 3,000 UZS/kg (from $0.15 to $0.23).
During the same period in 2024, the arrival of the first wholesale batches of new crop onions led to a price drop for last year's onions. In the first ten days of April 2024, the average wholesale price for the previous harvest decreased by a quarter, from 2,000 to 1,500 UZS/kg (from $0.16 to $0.12). Although this decline was temporary and prices quickly returned to 2,000 UZS/kg ($0.16), there was no subsequent price increase for last year's onions.
Whether the current price increase for last year's onions will be temporary is yet to be determined. This suggests that this season's onion price trends may diverge from the typical pricing patterns observed for early vegetables, as noted by EastFruit analysts.
