Early strawberry season begins in Western Ukraine with high prices

The strawberry season has officially begun in western Ukraine, with local produce now available alongside imported berries from Greece and Spain. Markets across the Zakarpattia region are offering the first batches of greenhouse-grown strawberries.

Prices remain relatively high. Berries sold for 120-150 UAH ($3-4) per kilogram, depending on quality. Producers expect only a modest decline in prices in the coming weeks, citing increased costs of energy, seedlings, and fertilizers. During peak season, anticipated in late May or early June, prices may drop to 80-100 UAH, but not to the pre-war lows once seen.

Despite the cost, many consumers are eager to buy local strawberries, valuing their freshness and taste. Others, especially pensioners or low-income shoppers, remain cautious, waiting for further price drops.

Health professionals advise moderate consumption of early-season berries. Grown in greenhouses, they may contain elevated levels of nitrates or pesticides due to accelerated ripening practices. Doctors recommend buying from trusted sellers, thoroughly washing or soaking berries before eating, and avoiding overconsumption, especially for children or individuals with sensitive digestion.
