Southern Germany:

Asparagus farmers report positive interim results

Despite changing weather, the asparagus season in Bavaria is going well: harvests are adequate, producers rate the quality of the spears as very good, and consumers can look forward to an abundant supply of regional asparagus, according to the Franconian Asparagus Producers' Association.

Asparagus farmers in southern Bavaria are also satisfied with the season so far. After a hesitant start due to the initial cold weather, the situation has improved significantly, explains Peter Strobl (top picture), managing director of the South Bavarian Asparagus Producers' Association. He is particularly pleased that yields and sales are perfectly matched. The dry weather in April did not pose a major problem for most producers. Adel admits that a little more rain would have been welcome. However, the asparagus coped well with the dry spell thanks to its deep roots. These provided the energy for growth during the season, adds Strobl. The lack of water was only noticeable in new fields with young plants.

Hesse: Supply and demand in balance
Asparagus farmers in Hesse are positive about the season so far. "Thanks to stable temperatures, the asparagus is growing steadily, so there has been neither overproduction nor undersupply," the Hessian Farmers' Association told the German Press Agency. This also ensures stable prices on local markets and in retail outlets.

Saarland: Downward trend in asparagus cultivation
Asparagus has been harvested again in Saarland since the end of March. However, there could be significantly less asparagus from Saarland in the future. The Farmers' Association expects asparagus cultivation in the state to continue to decline. However, Welsch said that asparagus farmers had largely absorbed the additional costs themselves. In addition, demand for regional and organic products has been declining significantly since the war in Ukraine.
