The prices of Thai jackfruit varieties cultivated in Vietnam have decreased by half to $0.15–$0.39 per kilogram due to tightened import protocols in China concerning banned substances and pesticide residues.
In the Mekong Delta provinces of Ben Tre and Tien Giang, key jackfruit production areas, prices for top-quality produce have been reduced. These areas were previously lucrative for farmers.
Hung, a local grower with 40 jackfruit trees, recently sold three tons for $0.19–$0.31 per kilogram, below his production costs of $0.34–$0.46. He stated, "If prices remain low, my family will suffer heavy losses this year."
Rising costs for fertilizer and labor, alongside increased quality standards from China, have added pressure. Industry insiders also noted that competition from seasonal fruits like watermelon, lychee, mango, and mangosteen contributes to the challenges.
Jackfruit exports in the first quarter of 2025 declined by 13% year-on-year to $70 million.
