As already highlighted by the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture in its report on the latest berry season, the acreage devoted to blueberry cultivation in the autonomous regions of Galicia, Cantabria and Asturias has been increasing since 2018. In fact, seven years ago, these three regions accounted for 6.8% of the total acreage, while today they account for 13.4%.
The productive potential of these regions is also remarkable, bearing in mind that, in Galicia's case, 37% of the planted area had not yet become productive last year, while in the case of Asturias or Cantabria, where the campaign will start in just a matter of days, this percentage stood at 7%.
"At Campoberry, we expect the harvest of the first blueberries of the season on the Cantabrian coast to start in 15-20 days," says Eduardo López. "This year we are perhaps running a little late, although in no way like last year, when we had to start around June 20 because of the weather. And although we've had fewer than 700 hours of cold, a normal production is still expected."
This reduction in the amount of cold hours in winter has had an impact on the production of other fruit trees in the northern regions; "nevertheless, in our farms we are growing some blueberry varieties that do not have high cold requirements and there's plenty of fruit."
Huelva's season peaked in week 19, and in just a few weeks, the crops from the north will also arrive, gradually taking over from the crops from the south.
"In our case, we are working almost exclusively for a Spanish supermarket chain based in the north, and they are already asking us when we are going to start harvesting so that the last batches from Huelva can be cleared out. Hopefully, we'll have the right weather conditions and we'll be able to supply our clients as soon as possible," says Eduardo.
"Also, this year we are expecting an increase in the production, because the farms that were planted in 2021 and 2022 are going to start yielding larger volumes, so we have good prospects for this season."
