In 2024, Peru's ginger exports reached 118.3 million dollars, which is 8% less than in 2023. However, this year, the sector anticipates a recovery, stated Edgar Vásquez, director of the Global Economy and Business Research Center of the CIEN-Adex Exporters Association.
During the 5th Ginger Week, organized by Adex and Proginger, the sector discussed strategies to enhance the capabilities of the ginger production chain in the regions of Junín, Pasco, Cusco, Huánuco, and Lima. Vásquez noted that the decline was due to a reduction in exports (-34.6%), but he emphasized that producers and exporters are recovering, representing an opportunity to strengthen the sector.
Despite the decline, Vásquez highlighted the importance of addressing challenges to ensure the sector's sustainability, such as good agricultural practices, supply health, and enhancing the technical capacities of small producers. "Consolidating a sustainable production chain with the leadership institutions, such as Agromercado and the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri), that are committed to continuing to position the consumption of our ginger in Peru and abroad is key," he said.
In 2024, the global ginger market reached 1,523 million dollars (+14.8%). The main buyers included the United States (187.4 million dollars, +12.3%), the Netherlands (171.9 million dollars, +11.3%), and Bangladesh (107 million dollars, +7%).
