Theo Tielen, Fris-Co:

"The best start to Dutch iceberg lettuce season"

"We are currently experiencing one of the best starts to the season in terms of the quality of Dutch iceberg lettuce," says Theo Tielen of Fris-Co, an exporter to the Italian market.

"All our growers began harvesting iceberg lettuce earlier than usual. Growing conditions have been ideal since March, allowing them to start harvesting in week 19. Thanks to the absence of rain and the calm, sunny weather, the iceberg lettuce has developed a beautiful green colour, and the heads are well-formed and uniform in both shape and weight. Shelf life is also excellent under these weather conditions. Sales are going well, enabling us to start fresh every morning."

"We are now seeing the first supermarkets begin their promotions, which is driving demand up quickly. The general expectation is that prices will rise slightly in the coming days," Theo continues. "Our advantage for customers is that we visit the growers every morning to check the quality, so we can start selling with the right message."

We know exactly what we are selling and can provide our customers with an honest story. This is something they greatly appreciate. With the variety of brands and growers we work with, we can offer every customer a tailor-made service. Let's hope we can maintain this quality throughout the season—it would be great for everyone in the supply chain!"
