New European scientific alliance for agriculture and food

Five of Europe's leading agricultural, food, and life sciences research institutions are launching the European Science Alliance for Agriculture and Food (ESAAF). According to a statement from INRAE, this scientific coalition aims to "support the transformation and strengthen the resilience of the European agri-food sector."

"As European decision-makers face urgent dilemmas, ESAAF will serve as a hub and dedicated scientific voice in policy debates on food systems, ensuring that future strategies are based on reliable and independent data," according to the press release.

Who are the members of ESAAF?

  • Aarhus University (AU) – Denmark
  • Julius Kühn Institute (JKI) – Germany
  • National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and the Environment (INRAE) – France
  • Wageningen University & Research (WUR) – Netherlands
  • Warsaw University of Life Sciences (WULS) – Poland

There are also plans to open up to other organizations from different regions of Europe.

What are the tasks?
ESAAF will be tasked with providing up-to-date, targeted, and rapid scientific input to support policy discussions. It will act as a platform for coordinated scientific advice at the European level on agriculture and food, to ensure synergies with existing networks and avoid duplication. Finally, it will support the coordination and launch of new research initiatives related to European challenges in the fields of agriculture and food.
