Bangladesh aims to export 120,000t mangoes to China

The Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) of Bangladesh is targeting mango exports to China at 120,000 metric tons this season. To assess the current state of preparations, EPB Vice-Chairman Md. Anwar Hossain visited Chapainawabganj, a prominent mango-producing region.

Conducting a tour on Tuesday, he explored export-ready mango orchards in Shibganj upazila, engaging with local farmers and entrepreneurs. A discussion meeting organized by the Chapainawabganj Chamber of Commerce and Industry followed the visit.

At the meeting, Anwar Hossain highlighted the potential for mangoes from Chapainawabganj to compete in global markets with enhancements in quality control and packaging. "We want to strengthen our footprint in international markets, and China is a key destination this year," he stated.

For sustainable export growth, EPB is considering multiple initiatives, such as forming a National Mango Board, drafting a mango export policy, and establishing hot water treatment plants to adhere to phytosanitary standards.

Additional plans include the installation of modern mango processing facilities, the provision of cost-effective solar panels for farmers, the initiation of cargo flights from Rajshahi Airport, and the development of an agricultural Export Processing Zone (EPZ).

To highlight Bangladeshi mangoes globally, EPB will host a "Mango Festival" next month in Chapainawabganj, inviting foreign diplomats and international buyers. "This initiative will help promote our mangoes globally and bring in significant foreign currency," added Anwar Hossain.

Current export challenges, particularly those related to land routes to India, were also addressed. The government is working towards resolving these issues.

The discussion included prominent figures such as Chamber President Abdul Wahed, EPB Product Director Md. Shahjalal and Chamber Vice-President Akhtarul Islam Rimon, along with local growers and traders.
