Taiwan ramps up fruit exports with US$562 million plan

The Ministry of Agriculture announced that Taiwan's exports of chilled fruit grew by 30% last year, contributing to a total of 1.9 million tons of agricultural products exported, valued at NT$157.44 billion (US$4.92 billion), according to CNA.

Taiwan pineapples were approved for import into New Zealand last April with zero tariffs, and exports to Japan reached a record 19,300 tons. The ministry said it will support pineapple exports through variety improvement, product traceability, and export quarantine procedures.

Taiwan lychees were exported to New Zealand for the first time last year, and mango exports have continued to grow annually since entering the New Zealand market in 2021. The government also plans to expand guava exports to New Zealand, according to Chen Tzu-wei, secretary-general of the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Agency.

Taiwanese dragon fruit entered the Japanese market for the first time in July 2023. The ministry credited the overall growth in produce exports to strong international recognition of Taiwan's food safety and quarantine standards.

In response to the impact of U.S. tariff policies on Taiwanese agriculture, the ministry held 14 forums in April and announced plans to invest NT$18 billion (US$562 million) to promote Taiwanese agricultural products and diversify export markets.
