The Coastal Companies recalls products for Salmonella risk

The Coastal Companies has announced a voluntary recall of 17 food products due to potential Salmonella contamination linked to cucumbers grown by Bedner Growers, Inc. and distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales, Inc. The affected products, which include various salads, salsas, and related items, were distributed by East Coast Fresh in Laurel, MD, and Hearn Kirkwood in Jessup, MD.

The recalled items were distributed between May 6 and May 21, 2025, to customers in Washington D.C., Ohio, Virginia, Michigan, West Virginia, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Vermont, and North Carolina. Brand names impacted by the recall include East Coast Fresh, TOPS, Wellsley Farms, WEIS, AHOLD, Jack and Olive, Created Fresh, and Spring and Sprout.

All affected products contain cucumbers and fall under various categories, such as fresh salsa and salads, with all lot codes being recalled. Consumers, restaurants, retailers, and wholesalers are advised not to eat, sell, or serve these products. If individuals are unsure whether their products contain cucumbers, they are instructed to discard them.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the broader cucumber recall from Bedner's Farm has been associated with 26 reported illnesses across 15 states. While none of the recalled Coastal Companies products have been linked to any reported illnesses at this time, the recall is being conducted as a precautionary measure.

Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause serious health complications, particularly in young children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems. Symptoms in otherwise healthy people may include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Anyone experiencing symptoms of Salmonella infection is advised to seek medical attention.

The Coastal Companies is cooperating fully with the FDA during this recall process. No other products distributed by the company are affected.
