"Potato prices under significant pressure, yet we remain among the most expensive in Europe"

"Things are not so easy in the potato market at the moment," says Wim Tuinstra of the Tuinstra potato wholesaler in Herkingen. "Prices are under significant pressure, and we won't change that easily because we remain among the most expensive countries in terms of pricing. If we don't lower prices, we will come to a complete standstill."

"Expectations were somewhat higher earlier this season. In December, supply seemed low, and demand was strong, but the situation is now very different. The industry is purchasing fewer potatoes, and exports are lagging. While demand from Eastern Europe is picking up slightly, it is too little to fill the week. When other destinations decline, everyone focuses on the same markets."

"We are also experiencing an early spring. Although the potatoes have yet to be harvested, the start is already much better than in the past two years. However, we won't know what the harvest will look like until later," the potato trader continued. "We have no complaints about quality. We managed to store the potatoes well, and the batches that had minor defects have already been sold."
