Moldova's grape exports seen as last resort move

In April, Moldova exported around 1,000 tonnes of table grapes, according to MAIA, as reported by Logos Press. Over one-third of the volume was shipped to Romania, where most of the grapes are expected to be processed by wineries rather than sold as fresh produce.

The average wholesale price was about $0.87 per kilogram, based on MAIA data. The chairman of the Moldovan Association of Grape Producers and Exporters, Gheorghe Gaberi, noted that the relatively low price, combined with storage and sorting costs, makes this trade scenario economically weak.

According to industry representatives, the April shipments reflect a forced decision. Producers had tried to sell grapes in February and March, but low demand led to price cuts. When exports finally picked up in April, the prices remained modest.

Experts believe that stronger results could be achieved by focusing on fall exports, when fresh table grapes are in higher demand and storage costs can be avoided.
