Admiral Ossama Rabiee, Chairman and Managing Director of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA), held a meeting with representatives of 25 major shipping lines and maritime agencies at the SCA's headquarters in Ismailia. The discussions focused on the impact of positive security developments in the Red Sea and Bab El-Mandab region on shipping routes through the Suez Canal. The meeting included key industry figures such as Adel El-Lamei, Chairman of the Port Said Chamber of Shipping.
Adm. Rabiee emphasized the importance of maintaining safe and efficient navigation in the Red Sea, citing recent improvements in regional security following the ceasefire in Yemen. He urged shipping lines to reconsider their navigation schedules and explore the possibility of gradually returning vessels to the region, highlighting the SCA's readiness to provide comprehensive services under both normal and emergency conditions. Rabiee underscored the importance of collective efforts to support global supply chains and alleviate pressures caused by previous disruptions.
The meeting addressed ongoing concerns among shipping lines, including the impact of insurance premiums for vessels transiting the Red Sea. Suggestions were made for temporary incentives to offset increased insurance costs. Industry representatives from Maersk, CMA CGM, and other major shipping companies expressed cautious optimism about the region's stability, noting the economic benefits of returning to the Suez Canal route over the longer, riskier Cape of Good Hope route.
Bahaa Badr, Chairman of Arabian Gulf Marine Trading Co. and agent of EVERGREEN LINE, praised the SCA's supportive role amid regional challenges. Adel Ellameey, Chairman of Port Said Chamber of Shipping, commended the Egyptian leadership's efforts to manage the crisis and suggested exploring global partnerships to strengthen the SCA's international position.
The meeting also highlighted ongoing initiatives by the SCA, including waterway development, fleet modernization, and enhanced maritime services such as ship maintenance, salvage, and crew change options. Rabiee reiterated the SCA's openness to foreign partnerships and its commitment to supporting clients with tailored services.
In closing, Adm. Rabiee assured attendees of his willingness to consider their proposals and to maintain open dialogue through regular meetings, including future discussions with the executive leadership of global shipping lines.
