Burhanpur's banana exports set to rise with strong demand

Banana exports from Burhanpur, which account for about 15% of India's total production, are anticipated to increase compared to the previous year. The summer's rainfall activity has fostered optimism for higher production levels, with increased interest from exporters.

In the financial year 2024–25, Burhanpur's banana exports reached approximately 70,000 MT, as per official data. Favorable summer rains have created conditions conducive to banana cultivation, raising expectations for higher yields. Harvesting has begun, with peak arrivals expected by June, according to local growers and traders.

"Export enquiries are good and much higher than the previous season. This is because banana production is likely to go up across all cultivating regions in this district. The weather remained favourable, and this will boost the yield and quality," stated Raghunath Patil, a banana farmer from Burhanpur.

Currently, Burhanpur is experiencing daily arrivals of nearly 140 truckloads of bananas, each carrying between 20 and 30 tons. The increase in supply is met with rising demand from both domestic markets and international buyers. The region's total production exceeded 1.7 million MT in the financial year 2024–25, according to official figures.

"Many local farmers in this district have started exporting on their own because the market is lucrative. Domestic demand has also jumped, mainly from Gujarat, Punjab, and other northern states," mentioned an official from the horticulture department in Burhanpur.

"I am receiving encouraging enquiries from exporters this season. With such high-quality produce and consistent supply, we expect a much better year for exports," commented a trader based in Burhanpur. Primary transit points for bananas from Madhya Pradesh include Burhanpur, Khandwa, Dhar, and Barwani.
