Mario de Goede, Dutoit Europe:

"Pineapple market shifts after rare high prices"

After an unusually expensive period for pineapples, the market has completely turned around in recent weeks. "We went from a free market price of 18 euros, which is quite rare, to prices now hovering around 10 euros or even lower," says Mario de Goede of Dutoit Europe.

He attributes the market shift primarily to an increase in supply. "For a while, only a limited number of pineapples were arriving, but now volumes have recovered. U.S. import tariffs are also playing a role. Typically, Costa Rican pineapple exports are evenly split between the United States and Europe, but due to current challenges, exporters are increasingly choosing the European market."

"In recent months, we experienced significant delays, and during the melon season, freight capacity was limited. Now there is more freight space available, but supply has also surged again. With the European stone fruit season starting, it will be quite a challenge to sell everything in an orderly manner."
