Greek authorities in Thessaloniki seized a quantity of cocaine concealed in a banana container from Ecuador, according to MEGA TV. During inspections at the SEMBO container terminal, fifty packages containing 57.919 kilograms of cocaine were found hidden in the container's refrigeration units.
This is not the first incident involving cocaine in banana shipments in Greece. In November 2024, authorities discovered another container in Piraeus, originating from Panama, with an estimated value of 4.1 million euros.
The recent operation was executed by the Central Port Authority of Thessaloniki's regional narcotics team, with support from the Thessaloniki customs office's mobile X-ray scanning system. This effort is part of increased measures to address drug trafficking via maritime routes.
Alongside the narcotics, officials confiscated the container and a GPS tracking device found with the drugs, likely used to monitor the shipment's route.
The Central Port Authority of Thessaloniki is conducting a preliminary investigation. The seized cocaine's estimated value is approximately €1,600,000.
