DA-2 targets garlic sector boost in Batanes

The Philippine Department of Agriculture in Region 2 (DA-2) is prioritizing the garlic sector's development in Batanes. During recent discussions, DA Assistant Secretary for Operations U-Nichols Manalo engaged with the Itbayat Garlic Producers Association. The focus was on overcoming challenges in garlic production, storage, and market access.

Rose Mary Aquino, DA-2 Executive Director, noted concerns regarding inadequate storage, market constraints, and yield issues. Manalo stressed, "Among the concerns raised were the lack of proper storage facilities, limited market access, and factors affecting yield." He also mentioned the importance of boron in improving bulb quality and yield.

Barby Balcita from the DA-2 Agriculture and Fisheries Information Section highlighted efforts to register Itbayat garlic with the National Seed Industry Council to enhance its market standing. Discussions also covered expanding cultivation areas and improving logistics to boost market competitiveness.

Aquino emphasized DA-2's ongoing collaboration with local governments to support garlic farmers. She stated, "Through its support, the DA hopes to boost garlic farming and give better income opportunities to farmers in remote areas like Itbayat."
