A look at Monoprix Lille’s fruit and vegetable department

In the centre of Lille, Monoprix—the French supermarket concept aimed at urban, quality-conscious consumers offers an interesting example of how fresh fruit and vegetables are presented. Monoprix is known for combining a varied, often international product range with a lifestyle offering that includes fashion, home decor, and personal care products all under one roof.

The fresh produce section is clearly divided into three zones, each with its own character. The vegetable section is beautifully and neatly arranged: Products are attractively displayed in baskets, with attention to colour, texture, and presentation. This is where the store's premium image comes through most clearly, although a closer look revealed that the quality of some items was lacking.

The fruit, on the other hand, is presented more functionally. Many products remain in their cardboard outer packaging and fall short in appearance compared to the vegetable section.

There is also a separate refrigerated section for (pre-packaged) organic fruit and vegetables, as well as a selection of packaged tomatoes. This is a somewhat unusual choice, as low temperatures are known to negatively affect the flavour of tomatoes.
