The Philippines is aiming to expand its agricultural exports to Egypt, focusing on high-value products like mangoes and bananas, following the recent approval for durian exports. Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel met with Egyptian Ambassador Nader Nabil Zaki to discuss potential trade opportunities for the country's top produce. Laurel expressed optimism that mangoes and bananas would soon follow durian in gaining market access, highlighting Egypt's growing confidence in the Philippines' plant health and safety systems.
Durian exports were approved last month after nearly two years of negotiations, pest risk assessments, and close regulatory collaboration between the two governments. In return for this access and the potential inclusion of other fruits, Laurel said the Philippines is working to facilitate the import of Egyptian grapes and ware potatoes, with assessments for these products already underway. The government is also exploring the possibility of sourcing garlic and onions from Egypt, with plans for technical assistance and information exchange in the near future.
Currently, agricultural trade between the two countries is valued at about $7.5 million annually. The Philippines mainly exports desiccated coconut and carrageenan to Egypt, while importing products like broths, soups, and dried kidney beans. The DA noted that the private sector is enthusiastic about deepening trade ties with Egypt, which is seen as a strategic gateway to broader markets across Africa and the Middle East.
This growing agricultural partnership also builds on long-standing diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Egypt, which began in 1946. Meanwhile, the Philippines continues to secure new international markets for its agricultural products. Alongside Egypt's approval for durian, last month also marked the debut of fresh Philippine mangoes in Italy. Negotiations are ongoing to introduce durian to New Zealand, further boosting opportunities for Filipino farmers, particularly in Mindanao.
