Strawberries from Manacor, from Agroilla

"We produce strawberries all year round with a traditional variety that nurseries produce specifically for us"

In the heart of the island of Mallorca, the company Agroilla, founded 35 years ago, produces strawberries all year round. "Strawberries from Manacor are our company's main product and one in which we have specialized along with other fruits, such as melon, watermelon or tomatoes on the vine, which are widely consumed in the Balearic Islands, but are increasingly grown in the rest of Spain," says Mateo Pascual, one of the three current partners in the company. "Just like the strawberries, all our products are harvested at the right point of ripeness so that our clients can enjoy fruit and vegetables with the best flavor and quality, unlike other products that arrive on the island from the mainland."

"We make use of hydroponic and elevated cultivation to be able to have a year-round supply of strawberries, which we sell mainly in Mallorca, although we also supply the other Balearic Islands and the mainland. We mainly serve select clients who demand our strawberries when the volume and quality of Huelva's production drop," says Mateo.

"We are now at the time of year with the highest production, from early April to mid-August, which coincides with a very interesting moment in terms of consumption," he says. "As far as varieties are concerned, for the last twenty years we have been growing a type of strawberry that is perfectly adapted to the weather and humidity of the island of Mallorca and which the nurseries produce specifically for us. This strawberry delivers what we are looking for in this fruit: an intense color, a very sweet flavor, and a good shelf life, even when harvesting it at the optimum moment for consumption."

"The quality of this variety is superior and, in fact, even when fully ripe and kept outside a refrigerator or cold store, it stays in great condition for three days without any issues. This is why the product has been doing so well for the last twenty years and is so highly appreciated by our clients," says Mateo Pascual.

One of Agroilla's great differentiating factors is the production of the exclusive Florida Pearl strawberry, grown in the Balearic Islands, thanks to an agreement with the company Emco Cal. "The exclusive white Florida Pearl strawberry appealed to us from the start because it is so unique, and we are the only authorized producer in the Balearic Islands. It is a gourmet product that is doing really well, both among tourists visiting the island and among locals, and everyone who tastes it is surprised by its flavor."

"Moreover, since we only harvest the fruit when fully ripe, the white strawberry's taste has nuances that it doesn't have in other places where it is harvested at a lower point of ripeness. In general, it has a flavor reminiscent of pineapple, but when harvested ripe, it has very surprising hints of apricot taste," says Mateo.

"The varieties we produce, the fruit's ripeness, and the fact that we deliver less than 24 hours after picking make our strawberries unique. In fact, we've found that when our strawberries are not available, consumers will simply not buy another one. It's a fruit that our customers look forward to and appreciate."
