Adriaan van Belzen, Daily Onions:

"More and more Egyptian exporters entering the onion trade without real expertise"

The Egyptian onion season is slowly approaching. "Everything is looking good, and I don't expect any problems with quality or availability," says Adriaan van Belzen of Daily Onions. "Last year, there were issues toward the end of the season, and it ended prematurely."

He does, however, anticipate more challenges in the trade this year, as the number of Egyptian onion suppliers continues to grow.

"This year, we attended the Berlin fair for the first time, and the largest turnout came from Egyptian exporters who, in reality, have no real involvement in the onion trade. Similarly, each year we see more importers bringing in a few containers of onions without having any real knowledge of the product. Fortunately, I don't import grapes from Egypt. Usually, they don't succeed with that either. My motto: Stick to what you know!"
