Thailand targets safer fruit exports to China

The Agriculture Ministry in Thailand is prioritizing chemical-free fruit exports to address uncertainties in the Chinese market. A high-level committee has convened to tackle challenges in exporting durians, lamyai, and mangoes to China. Agriculture Minister Narumon Pinyosinwat chaired the meeting, which focused on enhancing food safety measures to ensure fruits are chemical-free.

The committee has decided to compile a list of brokers who handle health-safe fruits for export, enabling Chinese customs to trace origins and verify safety. Currently, 307 brokers are included nationwide. The meeting also emphasized the need for related agencies to manage risks during the May-June harvest season effectively.

Risks involve water management, fruit quality control, lab testing, and farmer education on droughts and summer storms, which can impact fruit production. "The ministry will see to it that the fruit quality and safety meet standards," Mr. Narumon stated.
